In Dark Era, Priests call on Saints for aid for a multitude of reasons and/or benefits.

Some saints grand combat ability, others grant healing and some are more akin to utility effects. After reading Mantles in Complete Psionic 3.5, I have had a few more thoughts on this subject.

My thoughts are along this:

  • Priests have Faith Points which are used like Spell Points to power what ever spell effects a saint might grant
  • Priests Invoke Saints by making a skill check. Religion or Diplomacy for example vs a DC set by the Saint.
  • Once a Saint is Invoked, the priest gains access to the Saint’s Spell List and can spend Faith Points to power those spells as he or she wishes.
  • Saints also grant an additional benefit which is active while the Saint has been invoked. Like domain feats. Some Saints might require Faith Points to power the benefit (for example, Water Breathing might be granted by St Elmo as he was the patron saint of Sailors. Water Breathing might activate when ever needed for x rounds per FP spent.)
  • Only one Saint can be invoked at a time. Might be difficulties if an Invoking Test is failed or failed by 5 or 10 what ever.
  • Priests only learn a certain # of Saints at start of play  and learn more during play. Probably every odd level. ie Level 1, 3,5,7 etc gaining 1 additional saint. Priests gain FP as per a progression. EG Cleric or Favoured Soul/Sorcerer and Bonus FP based on high Charisma Score. Wisdom is used for Religion and Invoking Tests. or the other way around.

Seems to be something fairly solid here. One could simply use the Divine Mind from Complete Psionic as a basis and rename Power Points to Faith Points.

Hmm.

Anyway, I have some thinking on this.
